Understanding the World of Wastewater Treatment

Understanding the World of Wastewater Treatment
  • Originally published June 24, 2019

In the mid-1800s, the world experienced the third Cholera Pandemic. This time, the disease killed more than 23,000 people in Britain alone. No one knew where the disease was coming from and doctors couldn’t stop it.

A Breakthrough

Move forward 30 years where a man named Louis Pasteur showed the world how microbes could move through the water sources, causing them to carry the disease. The world decided to make a change. Filtration systems were implemented, but it still wasn’t enough. The water continued to contain contaminants of other kinds.

Today’s Water

An estimated two-thirds of the world’s municipalities today are using chlorine to clean the water for their citizens. This treatment of water is used mainly on wastewater before it is allowed to be released into nearby rivers. It was discovered that allowing wastewater with no treatment to flow into the rivers was the cause of the Cholera pandemics all those years ago.

Now, with more technology, the world is able to safely move wastewater to rivers without contaminating anything and making anyone sick. Today, there are more ways of effectively saving water from contamination with chemicals and specialized equipment.

ChemTec manufactures specialized equipment, called flow monitors, for wastewater companies.

Flow Monitors/Flow Meters

The specialized monitors and meters that ChemTec produces have a very unique effect on the cleansing of wastewater. These flow monitors and meters use chemical dosing for feeding the system to treat the water.

These monitors and meters come in a variety of types to allow for more productive flow and cleansing of the water. The three main types used are the non-adjustable FS series, the adjustable LCA series, and the MAO series flow meters. FS models will handle water flows of 0.25 – 8.50 GPM; the LCA models work over 0.1 – 15.0 GPM; and the MAO 125/250 and MAO 500 models work over 0.32 – 28.53 GPH or 1.89 – 13.25 GPH, respectively. These are available in PVC, brass, and 316 stainless steel for corrosion resistance.

How They Work

Flow monitors and meters work in a very specific way to help cleanse wastewater before releasing it into local rivers.

In a typical cleansing system, chlorine gas is injected into the water and the fast-moving water pulls the gas in and mixes with it to thoroughly disinfect the water. The system is highly reliant on the flow of the water to ensure it’s fast enough to draw in the chemicals and clean the water supply. That’s where the flow monitors and meters come in.

These monitors and meters are incorporated into the water filtration system and set up to monitor that the flow (varying by the system) remains constant at all times. If there are any changes in the flow, the monitors are designed with simple switch closure signals (that can be sent to an audible alarm or light) to notify that the system is not running at levels that it should be. The flow meter will give a constant reading of the system at any given time for convenient monitoring.

Conclusion

This system is useful in all filtration systems and has helped keep the world safe from a diseased water supply. ChemTec continues to work toward improving and perfecting their monitors and meters to better help the filtration systems of the world’s wastewater and ensure the safety of the world.
