Hydrogen Safety and the NFPA

Home » News » Hydrogen Safety and the NFPA

  • in ChemTec News & Updates

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is the world’s leading advocate of fire prevention and an authoritative source on public safety. The NFPA develops, publishes and disseminates consensus codes and standards intended to reduce the possibility and repercussions of fire and other risks. Did you know recently the NFPA updated their safety codes for hydrogen? It’s titled under, “NFPA 2: Hydrogen Technologies Code.”

The updated code provides fundamental safeguards for the generation, installation, storage, piping, use and handling of hydrogen in compressed gas form or cryogenic liquid form and contains additional use-specific categories, such as vehicle fueling facilities, systems for fuel cell power and generation, applications involving combustion processes and special atmospheres, and operations in the lab. Our engineers at ChemTec are passionate about developing safe and reliable flow valves and monitors that meet a demand like that of hydrogen fuel cell energy market.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell Energy Safety & ChemTec’s HPEFV

As hydrogen and fuel cells begin to play a bigger role in meeting the energy demands of our country and the world, minimizing the safety hazards related to the use of hydrogen as a fuel is essential. If there was a broken line, ChemTec’s High Pressure Excess Flow Valve would prevent continuous flow of hydrogen gas to the atmosphere. The HPEFV features an automatic shutdown, so if the trip point is exceeded the valve will shut down automatically to prevent hydrogen from escaping into the atmosphere.

Product Features:

  • Controls high pressure excessive flows
  • Controlled bleed resets automatically
  • Field adjustable
  • Positive shut-off option
  • Maximum pressure 6000 PSIG
  • Detects excess flows
  • Detects increase in media viscosity
  • Function: Restricts or shuts off flow
  • Output: Switch contact (optional)
