Flow Monitors and Dialysis Machines

Nearly half a million Americans depend on a dialysis machine to replace functions their kidneys are unable to perform. Some are able to use a home dialysis machine while others rely on larger systems in hospital renal units. Stable rates of fluid flow are essential for safe and effective dialysis, making flow monitors an essential component of these machines.

Flow and ultrafiltration

Using pure water, bicarbonate and acid, dialysis machines heat and mix a dialysate solution. This is used to filter the blood and balance electrolytes and pH levels. As with the blood, precise control of flow is essential for safe and effective treatment.

Should flow rates move outside of defined limits, the consequences can be serious for the patient. Blood will not be cleaned as needed and electrolyte and pH levels will quickly move out of the target range. In an extreme case the membrane could rupture, causing contamination, infection and blood loss. This is why it’s so important to monitor the flow rates within the machine.

Improving performance with the LPH Series

A flow monitor like the LPH series from ChemTec is an ideal fit for dialysis machines and similar processes. Designed for low flow situations, the LPH incorporates a magnetic piston suspended in the fluid. An external sensor detects displacement resulting from excessively high or low flow and activates the alarm circuit. This guards against flow problems, including those caused by blocked or broken filters.

LPH series flow monitors are produced with bodies of brass, 316 stainless, acrylic or Teflon. Wetted parts are made from the same materials. All but the acrylic are suitable for temperatures from -17 to 104°C (0 to 220°F). (Acrylic works from 0 to 71°C (32 to 160°F)). Models are available for flow rates from 1 to 950 mlmin (0.016 to 12.05 GPH).

Customization is key
